One of the things I love doing the most since arriving in China, is sending postcards. From my time in Beijing to my time here in Xiamen, I’ve loved sending postcards to my friends and family around the world. I’ve always liked letters and stamps and decided that since I live in a different country, it would be a great chance to have people receive postcards from me. Anyway, how often is it that someone you know from abroad remembers you and decides to send you a letter or postcard? In this new day and age of internet technology, people have started to take for granted communication with friends since an email or text can send a letter in a matter of seconds.
Buying postcards have been my favorite pasttime. I’ve been trying to limit my buys because postcards and stamps are a bit expensive, but on the rare times that I do find nice postcards, I tend to buy them. I’ve probably bought more or less 100 postcards since arriving in Xiamen, though maybe 20-30 of those have been sent to friends and family.
Because I love sending and receiving postcards, I decided to join this site called Postcrossing, which is a postcards exchange site. Since it’s too hard to try and explain the concept, why don’t you check out the site yourself, it has it’s own translation in Chinese. My friend recommended I join in when I was still living in Beijing, but because I had only started sending postcards and it was a bit expensive, I didn’t want to go into it. As of this post, I’ve been a member less than 2 months, and I haven’t received my first postcard yet, but I’m excited to await the day that I will get my first postcard from a complete stranger.
Postcards I’ve sent to Europe
Imagine, receiving a postcard of another country and meeting strangers from halfway across the globe, I think it’s an amazing experience.
